I’m in France for work I want to be doing. How removed from danger I feel is a joke. It’s unjust. It stares me in the face. I am safe. In the countryside. Stars at night. That.
This isn’t about me. The first text I received from my boyfriend (that word sounds so f*cking trite everytime I say it). Danny. The first text I read the morning I woke up, in this bliss, was from Danny and it said, “8 people were shot and killed on Calhoun street in Charleston.” his subsequent texts described what would be broadcasted on the news since. Charleston. That home. Those faces. Far away.
We write because we’re selfish. I don’t need the internet to know that I cry If I think about their names. I don’t need the internet to know that I keep counting objects. Three ducks. Six coins. Nine flowers. Nine.

Fremont Street, the first-ever paved street in the city, was my favorite part of our trip. It was debauchery away from the strip and somehow better. Less Calvin Harris Billboards. (Read as: none.)

I had sworn of Las Vegas. Going with Danny was a testament to how much a person changes you and what you do for them. JK. It was a vacation, and I would go with him to a dumpster if it meant we got to hangout for a week straight. (Long-distance can be a struggle.) Anyway, I resisted his Vegas suggestions.”Pick literally anywhere else,” is how that went.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…or it shows up on blogs. In our case, I turned into freak who was obsessed with all things Fabulous L.V. I loved it. That bizarre land in the middle of the desert….How wrong I had been! We hiked Mount Charleston, drove through red rock, found a chocolate factory/cactus garden, and stayed too long on Freemont Street, and spent time with some of his relatives. We also did the usual Vegas things, like wandered the Strip* and lounged with mojitos & magazines poolside. We didn’t get married, but we did play Katy Perry’s “Waking Up In Vegas” each morning in our hotel room. Vacation done right with my dearest one. You can’t ask for more than that.

Spent a week out West with Danny to celebrate his birthday (more on that fun later) and fell totally in love. Here’s photos from Red Rock Canyon, just fifteen miles or so outside Vegas. We packed a lunch and took the scenic drive. Not a bad date. Nevada rocks!
